Second Saturday Handbuilding Pottery

Simple Handbuilding

Designed for family time, sessions are loosely structured and flexable. We start with a very short demonstration to show the basic tips and techniques of handbuilding with clay. The focus is " Hands On" so we move things right along.

Examples are displayed of the types of things that can be made.

These projects are built using slump, hump or press molds. The first step is for everyone to chose a mold to work from.

Handbuilding group session

Slabs are made out of raw clay using a slab roller.

The slab is shaped with the mold and embellished with our large selection of stamps, sprigs and carving tools. Next, it is decorated by painting with colored slips.

Later, after it has a chance to dry, we put clear glaze on it and fire it for you. It is ready for pick up in two to four weeks.

For this session, we use non-toxic low-fire materials. Please realize low-fire pottery is considered non-functional, decorative ware. This is because it is still porous after it is fired. Also, since it is porous, we do not consider it food safe and it will not hold water.
